Daddy's Helper

Ian LOVES his Daddy, and wants to be with him, doing whatever he is doing. We had a load of mulch delivered a couple of weeks ago, and he was eager to "help." We even bought an Ian-sized shovel, and they both worked really hard!

Getting to Know Ian

I asked Ian to answer a few questions. Some of the responses were very appropriate and sweet, others completely random. I would expect nothing less from a 3-year-old. It will be interesting to see how his answers change over time.

What are you good at doing? Dancing
If you had ten dollars, what would you buy? Ummmmmmm, Cactus McQueen
What are you afraid of? Allosaurses
Who are your friends? Megan and Levi and Bryce
What is important to you? I don’t know
What is your favorite book? The 2 Curious George books
What is your favorite food? French fries
What is your favorite thing about church? My class
What is your favorite thing to do? Read a book in my bed
How do you show your family you love them? By counting their blessings
What do you want to be when you grow up? A monster and Superman to tell my friends what to do

Ian says the darndest things...

Cute things he says that I don't want to forget...

1. "Mommy, can I sit in your lap and cover up with you so that we can be compy, cozy together?" YES!

2. Since I've been sitting in the chair a LOT over the last 8 weeks or so (feeling overall very yucky from the pregnancy), Ian will periodically come over and lay his head on me and say, "Mommy, I'm gonna take care of you forever." So sweet. One time recently, I told him that someday he would get married and be a daddy, and he would have other people to take care of. His response: "Yeah, and Daddy will be an Ian someday!" Interesting logic...

3. We give Ian lots of 2-minute warnings... in 2 minutes, it will be time for dinner. In 2 minutes, we're going to get in the car and go, and so on. We find it works well to avoid combat. Today, after one of my warnings, he said, "Okay, Mommy, Okaaaaaay. Calm. Down." We had to hide our faces to exchange a look and laugh.

More to follow, I'm sure!

"Mother of the Year"

Well, I had yet another incident that will surely hurt my chances of winning the title "Mother of the Year." I hesitate to even blog this moment for fear of the authorities tracking me down, but I'm going to because I'm sure Ian will enjoy reading about it some day. (That's really my motivation for this entire blog... the fact that Ian will love to read this some day.)

Okay, so Ian was in his room for "naptime." Apparently, he wasn't sleepy, so I was listening to his stories, songs and pitter-pattering feet around his room. I had already encouraged him a couple of times to try to sleep, but he was obviously not sleepy. At one point, I heard him yell, "Hello! Hello!" I just figured he was talking to his Winnie the Pooh that he sleeps with.

After 2 hours in his room, he called for me, so I decided to set him free. He told me he was saying hi to our neighbors. That explained the greetings yelled at the top of his lungs. I asked him which neighbor he saw, and he said he didn't know his name, but it looked like he threw something at our house (the paperboy).

Fastforward about 30 minutes. Dan comes home and asks if I opened the window in Ian's room. I told him that I didn't. (You have to know that we keep his curtains closed because the only thing Ian does in his room at this point in his life is sleep. I wouldn't have seen an open window.) Dan told me that not only was the window open, but the screen was up, too! (Dan and I didn't even know the screens could be raised!) YIKES!

Lessons learned from this experience:
1. Make sure all of the windows are locked!
2. Engage the safety feature on the windows that keeps robbers out and 3-year-olds in... window only lifts a few inches!
3. Teach Ian to not talk to strangers, especially from 2nd story windows during naptime!

TWINS!!!

We told Ian tonight that he is going to be a big brother!! (We are having TWINS, due Sept. 17th, but will most likely arrive in August if everything goes as planned!)

He gasped, looked at my belly (which is definitely popping out), and immediately wanted to know if there were brothers or sisters in there. We told him we don't know yet, to which he responded, "I think it's 2 boys because I am a boy." We'll find out towards the end of April at our next ultrasound. We didn't find out with Ian, but will try the 21st century approach this time.

It has been a long road for us to get to this point, so arriving at the second trimester is a major milestone. We had an ultrasound earlier this week, and things looked great. We appreciate your prayers for a smooth pregnancy, and 2 healthy babies!

Christmas in March?

How do you tell a 3 year old to file away the Christmas carols in his mind until the day after Thanksgiving 2008? He wants us to sing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Away in a Manger every night before bed, and he sang Jingle Bells in his bed today before he drifted off for his nap! I guess the snow outside is not helping our case, so come on spring! Aren't there any good spring songs we could learn... although I guess we would just be singing those in late October!

Ian jumps the pond

So, we were watching American Idol tonight (which Ian is surprisingly into), and he wanted to know what Simon meant by "Betta, and betta, and betta." (Say that out loud in your best British accent.) He thought it was pretty funny after we explained it.

By the way, did you know that Chikezie looks like Uncle Neil and Grandpa??? (Obviously, different family trees, but they all have beards!)
